I'm kind of on a Beatles kick right now... Wow, when did I write that? Yeah, I think it's more than a kick.

150 frames of chaos

"Hmm"

date: March 21, 2004

This is one of the more interesting frame-by-frame flash animations I've seen. That said, it's far too short for anything to sink in, or for it to make any kind of point. Spend more time making longer, higher-quality pieces, and you should do well.

Author's Response:

well that was the whole point, it was only 150 frames, so we just had to tell a quick story and then end it. there is a method to the madness.

Fat and You

"Beh"

submission: Fat and You

Except for the background music, none of this was very high quality.

You do realise that carrots and potatoes are fattening, don't you?

Author's Response:

No, no I didn't.

Forces Of Nature

"Pretty good"

submission: Forces Of Nature

Most of the animation was good, but some of the actual drawings were lacking. The bird and the stone elemental's final change, for instance. Why did he turn smooth and blocky, anyway? I thought he was that from the beginning. And the story didn't have a resolution, positive or negative -- as if you just ran out of song and stopped.

"Great physics"

date: February 21, 2004

A lot of people say that the characters move too slow. I think it would really help the gameplay if you gave a character a starting velocity as soon as a movement button was pressed, rather than starting them out at 0. Either that, or base the rate of acceleration on the current velocity -- large acceleration from standing start, low acceleration at a high velocity. Maybe an equation like A = 5/(1+V/2) would work (assuming the unit of velocity is something like 1 pixel/second; also, I have no idea what your acceleration and maximum velocity are in-game).

I don't know what the in-air physics are like in sonic games, but except for Tails, being able to steer yourself in air doesn't seem right. Allowing a bit of that while jumping alongside a wall seems fine, otherwise you'd never be able to get over ledges. And I don't think you should bounce off of walls when you hit them at fairly slow horizontal speeds, such as the aforementioned case of jumping alongside a wall.

Still, good job implementing so many features from the game. I miss those power bubbles, too.

Knoxs "Reloaded" 6

"41th?"

submission: Knoxs "Reloaded" 6

This is your forty-firth award?

Heh, anyway, this one wasn't bad. I think some of the others were funnier, but oh well. If you're not going to do any more from reloaded, how about narrating another horror movie, like scream, or a superhero movie? Heh, a batman or superman movie would provide plenty of material.

Punk-o-matic

"Good job (of course)"

submission: Punk-o-matic

One of the few things I would recommend (besides mroe sound samples, of course; you included other features AND narration and still only used 3/5 of the file limit, there's plenty of space left!) would be to have every sample fade off at the end. That way, an instrument could be stopped at any note without being abrubtly cut to silence. Also, I'd rather be able to type in a number in each box than have click to cycle through all of them.

Now, the requisite song:
5-572---3-1-0--71---3-2-4-0---775-------6-1-1--80---3-2-4-9 ------------------------------4-4-0---5-0-9-4---9---8--35-5- 3-7-7-6-3-4--74-5-c----------------------------------------- -1---1-4-6-4-3-3-2-5-4-6-6-1---5-1-8-8-6---3-3-a------------ ----------------

Wall Avenger

"Good movie"

submission: Wall Avenger

This is one of the few movies with excellent physics. Good job on that, and good use of tweening motion. You should be able to make some really strong movies with other forms of animation than simple sticks.

Newgrounds RPG Demo

"Ugh"

date: February 12, 2004

I don't know why you released such an early version as a "Demo". It doesn't even demonstrate anything besides walking, talking to NPCs, and OMG RANdm aBttlela!!!

First, why can you only walk in square-shaped steps? This isn't a console where square, tile-based sprites and coding can speed up performance. The backgrounds aren't even tile based. What's the point? Even the Zelda games, whose backgrounds WERE tile-based, allowed free movement (on the horizontal plane).

Next, the battles. RANDOM! Why pure random? What is the point of having a 1/8 or 10% or any flat chance of fighting an enemy EVERY square (gah) that you step? Why not have them wandering around the map, jumping out of trees, ambushing the player, or anything that gives the player a chance to avoid them if they want? Why not start the chance low (read: 0%) after a battle, and slowly increase it with every step?

The battle system itself is ridiculous. Enemies do nothing but move towards you if they're too far away to attack, and either attack if you're not attacking, defend if you are, OR DO NOTHING!.,;'l. If you attack constantly, you're guaranteed to kill them.

There's no items, no other weapons or armor, no healing (that makes leveling up completely useless, by the way -- if you're not going to fully heal on level up, either add the difference between old HP and new, or keep the fraction the same (IE, if you have 40/200 HP when you level up, gaining 80 HP, in the fractional system you should have 56/280 HP)), experience isn't an integer (?!?), no shops, no goal, and the graphics aren't exactly great. You didn't even list the keys and their actions!

Red Planet

"Tusken had the right idea"

submission: Red Planet
date: February 11, 2004

This animation is interesting mainly for its use of sound. The sounds match the situations fairly well, and the art is effective, even if the animations are quite lacking. Using more frames of animation, and higher quality art in general (try smaller bitmap sizes to keep the size down, and a smaller movie size to disguise this) would really help in the depiction of actions and the rendering of the background.

Mutations creations(DEMO)

"Interesting creator"

date: February 10, 2004

You could make it a lot more random, though. Randomizing the scenes' order, as well as the positions and actions of the sprites, would make it much more interesting. Including a database of random phrases for the text boxes (not to mention far of the boxes to fill in) would be a great idea.
